Bringing National and International Art to Edinburgh

Callum Russell

Callum Russell’s multidisciplinary practice is concerned with language and writing, with particular emphasis on how digital technologies and culture affect language and written communication today.

New technologies have always changed the way we write and communicate. From the invention of the printing press and moveable type, up to the latest instant messaging and social media apps these new developments change the shape, structure and uses of language. Russell's artistic practice investigates these ideas, looking at both contemporary language uses and issues, as well as looking back to earlier language cultures and practices.

This drawing series is the development of a previous series of paintings that mimicked the classic A4 lined paper design. Using the four elements of these paintings – red lines, blue lines, holes and black spray marks he wanted to create a series of new A4 lined paper drawings that while familiar in their geometric structure, might also be seen as the arena of an unknown language or an unfamiliar writing format.
