Paul Charlton
Paul Charlton graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a degree in Sculpture. He endeavours to create works of beauty and mystery, that intrigue people and allows them to create their own stories.
After graduating, Paul worked in theatre, designing and building sets. He later studied furniture making and restoration. Paul is currently working with photography and printmaking. His sculpture, theatre and furniture making skills come across in his unique pieces.
He has won several awards including ‘The Sally Schofield Memorial Prize’ from Visual Arts Scotland and The Ramsay Cornish Prize’ from Scottish Society of Artists. His work has been exhibited in several places including the Royal Scottish Academy and Stills in Edinburgh.
Paul predominantly makes portraits and figurative works, trying to create a sense of a different era and historical quality. He uses costume and face paint to give the subjects a timeless feel, creating characters rather than individuals.
Primarily, he uses wood as a surface medium, applying paint/photographs or using printing techniques as appropriate. He pays careful attention to the presentation of the finished piece of art.
Creating a solid, three-dimensional artwork is an important part of his process and helps to blend the boundary between the visual and tactile.
