Bringing National and International Art to Edinburgh

Björn and Amanda Sjöling

Björn and Amanda Sjöling are partners both in art and in life, who live and work from Dorset. Their latest project "Remains To Be Seen" is their most ambitious to date and pushes the scope of their work in both technical and conceptual terms to re-create a series of skeletons and exoskeletons with extraordinary attention to detail and breath-taking technical finesse.

Björn has a background in engineering, and a natural affinity for all things mechanical. From young age, he developed an uncanny aptitude for understanding and manipulating the mechanical world, opening a whole universe of creative possibility.

Amanda, on the other hand, is fascinated by the body’s role not only as a machine for living, but also as a tool of expression. She believes that non-verbal communication is key to our communal identity.

When they began to work together, bones seemed a natural starting point, intersecting their individual interests in the mechanical and the anatomical. For them, skeletons are not harbingers of death and destruction, but rather the mechanical framework that makes life possible. By peeling away the external layers of our corporeality, they hope to reveal the inherent beauty concealed within our own bodies. Once exposed, these bones become a symbol of our own universality – the skeletons in their work are at once ‘no body’ and ‘every body’ through the absence of any external characteristics. Lacking a face or a voice, these skeletal figures remain extraordinarily expressive, emphasizing the importance of bodily communication.

In 2015, Urbane Art Gallery brought to Scotland for the first time, the impressive life-size, bronze and stainless steel sculpture ‘NoBody Does It Better’, a take on the Vitruvian Man by DaVinci, which became a focal point for the Edinburgh International Science Festival.
